What Is Internet Time? by Carpediem2100 February2006 ====================== INTERNET TIME is another method of removing timezones by referencing one time meridian. UNIVERSAL TIME or Greenwich Mean Time, removes timezones by standardizing to the Prime Meridian. This method is easy to adapt; One can use any standard timepiece/ clock. Many use this method including some military personnel. Internet time removes timezones by standardizing to the Biel Meridian (BMT). Standard timepieces will not easily accommodate this method. Internet time is measured in Swatch(R) .beats. One day is divided into 1000 units or ".beats". (Each .beat is 1 minute and 26.4 seconds.) In Biel, Switzerland, @000 .beats marks midnight. Noon in Biel, is the same as @500 .beats. The Java applet on this page converts local computer time into internet time. Method Abbr Meridian Location Increments/day ------ ---- ----------------- -------------- UniversalTime UT/GMT Greenwich Obs. near London,Eng. 1440 minutes InternetTime BMT Biel, Switzerland 1000 .beats (note: Biel is 1 hour ahead of London, that is, when it is 17:00hrs in Biel, it is 16:00hrs in London) an example ========== Sam, in Sydney arranges to chat online with Marty who lives in Manila, at @976 .beats. The local time in Sydney is 09:25hrs. The local time in Manila is 06:25hrs. If Charlie in Cairo joins in at @976, the local time in Cairo is 00:25hrs. (note: Sydney is 3 hours ahead of Manila; Manila is 6 hours ahead of Cairo) Download your own standalone apps or Java applet for internet time from http://www.swatch.com
